Onam

Onam  is the cultural festival of Kerala that marks the return of King Mahabali a.k.a Maveli. Actually for Kerala Mallus onam is a one week celebration beginning from Atham and ends on Thiruvonam
This is totally a colorful festival when families go for a detailed shopping to buy mostly traditional dresses like saree and flowers. Flowers are used for the floral rangoli starting from Atham. The threshold will be decorated with a floral rangoli everyday.
Thiruvonam would be the most special of all days. Everyone wakes up so early by 5 and begin the onam rituals with things like Thrikkarappan- the pyramid shaped idol made of clay is praised on that day. It is also called ONATHAPPAN in some places. Atham, Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradom, and Thiruvonam are the 10 days of Onam.
But Uthradam is actually the 1st Onam. Thiruvonam is Second Onam.
Lunch is the main part of Onam, where rice would be served on banana leaves followed by a variety of curries and fried items. The Onasadhya as the lunch is called is concluded by a sweet called payasam or kheer. The payasam can be made with different objects but the amount of sugar for the sweetness is same. Vermicelli, moong dal, steamed rice flour flakes, Cracked Wheat, banana etc. But as time passed varieties have been brought to this payasam.

The date for onam falls on different date in different years depending on the malayalam calendar. This year its today. So wishing you all a Happy Onam.
